Cheviot Publishing was created by dynamic entrepreneurial duo Elmari Swart and Jaap Scholten, epicureans with a passion for life. Inspired by the art of living well, they launched Cheviot Publishing in October 2004, a premier boutique publishing house, based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Cheviot Publishing specialises in the research, writing and publication of books for selected niche markets. Our commissioned books capture what we call "the essence of local knowledge", combining the intimate knowledge of subject experts with leading edge technology. The custom publishing division sources suitable manuscripts from clients for production, printing and publishing on additional themes. Our locational photography is supported by a bespoke photographic studio and post-production facilities.
Cheviot's vibrant team is supported by key partnerships with the printing, distribution and marketing sectors, enabling us to deliver beyond expectation.

Co-founder and Publisher ~ Elmari Swart
In her career, Elmari Swart combined professional knowledge with extensive local and international travel — culminating in winemaking in France, Australia and South Africa; contributions published in European wine magazines and a Masters degree in Oenology from the esteemed Stellenbosch University. Elmari is the second woman in South Africa to achieve this prestigious academic rank. Elmari has written about diverse wine-related subjects, ranging from the chemistry in wine to the more subjective understanding of terroir.
She has received several international and local awards – both in publishing and business – and her first title became a best-seller within a few months of publication, establishing her as one of the foremost English writers on the subject.
Elmari indulgences her boundless passion for winemaking – she and her husband produce 1,200 bottles of fine wine annually in their garagiste winery. While she is regularly invited to judge wines for local competitions, Elmari expands her experienced pallet by regularly travelling to international wine-making regions.
Co-founder and Financial Manager ~ Jaap Scholten
Jaap Scholten received his first camera at the age of ten – a Yashicaflex 120 with bellows – and spent many hours in the household's permanent darkroom. Jaap is an entrepreneur personified; having made his mark in the IT industry as an exceptionally skilled technologist and businessman, the realm of digital photography presented a perfect fit between wine, publishing, and IT. In order to keep it real, he produces wine with his wife, and regularly travels abroad to visit the famous and the lesser-known wineries of the world.
Jaap prefers to express his work in landscape and detail photography, and shares his wife's boundless passion for fine wines.
